Bold & bright colours have been in fashion for a while now & look to stay. If you think it’s best to team your bold hue with black, think again! Most stylists would consider black a colour & not a neutral! Are you surprised by this? Black in itself is a really strong colour, therefor teaming it with another equally strong colour, causes a fight for attention.

Just to clarify, neutral colours in the world of fashion, are simple colours that you can wear with everything. Colours such as beige, nude, navy, grey, cream, white, brown & charcoal; are perhaps better options to choose from because they will work with any other colour & not fight it for attention, but rather compliment & calm.

There is a BUT coming here…while it might be ideal to own separates in every colour of the rainbow, it’s not always practical. When you have a pair of fabulous black pants that tick all the right boxes for your shape & style, do you really have to give them up when teaming with this seasons citrus yellow jacket? Like any fashion rule of thumb there are some ‘get out clauses’!

To make black work with any colour, bold or otherwise, here are some ideas to bring calm to your outfit. Think of it as feng shui for fashion! Basically all you need to do is add one piece in your outfit in a neutral shade of some sort. Keep in mind that accessories can also be included as theses calming pieces; shoes & scarves are great options. Accessories tend to be smaller in proportion, to really make an impact, you will need to incorporate as many as you can in neutral tones to your outfit to make a difference.
